Enjoying unanimous support, the general principles of the British Sign Language (Wales) Bill was passed today in the Senedd – the first hurdle before a Bill can become law.
Commenting, Welsh Conservative Senedd Member for North Wales, Mark Isherwood MS, who introduced and leads this Private Member’s Bill said:
“I am immensely proud of the work that has gone into producing the much-needed British Sign Language (Wales) Bill.
“I would like to place on record my thanks to my team, external partners and all those who have helped make this Bill a reality.
“The barriers that exist for deaf people and their families in education, health, public services, support services and in the workplace will be greatly reduced by this Bill. With today’s vote, I hope that the needs of our deaf communities will be better reflected in services going forward.”
