Baby loss in Wales

Thank you for reaching out to me about the heartbreaking issue of baby loss in Wales.

The loss of a child is a profound and devastating tragedy—one that no parent should ever have to endure. It is deeply concerning that Wales continues to have the highest stillbirth rate in the UK. In a time when medical knowledge and healthcare have advanced so significantly, it is unacceptable that so many families are still facing such unimaginable grief.

I am particularly troubled by the findings from the Sands and Tommy’s Joint Policy Unit, which highlight the severe lack of data collection around miscarriages in Wales, as well as the inadequate mental health and follow-up support available to families. These are critical gaps that must be addressed with urgency and compassion.

The Welsh Government must take responsibility and act decisively. This includes setting and meeting clear targets to reduce stillbirths, neonatal deaths, and pregnancy loss—while also tackling the inequalities that contribute to these outcomes.

My Welsh Conservative colleagues and I are committed to improving this situation. We strongly support more robust data collection and would implement a comprehensive recruitment and retention strategy within the Welsh NHS. Our goal is to ensure that families affected by baby loss receive the care, support, and dignity they deserve.

Thank you again for taking the time to write to me.

Your voice matters, and I will continue to advocate for meaningful change on this deeply important issue.
