Consistent stench from Hafod Quarry Landfill Site raised in Senedd

After receiving complaints from residents in Johnstown regarding the foul smells coming from the Hafod Quarry Landfill Site, North Wales MS Mark Isherwood has today called for a Welsh Government Statement on the matter from the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs.

Speaking during today’s Business Statement in the Senedd, Mr Isherwood said that residents are concerned by the lack of action by Natural Resources Wales to stop the stench and referred to a motion regarding the matter which will be presented at the next full Wrexham County Council meeting.

He said:

“I call for a Welsh Government Statement from the Climate Change Secretary on the Hafod Quarry Landfill Site between Johnstown and Ruabon, Wrexham.

“Constituents in Johnstown have again written to me to complain about ‘the persistent stench’ from the Site and Natural Resources Wales's ‘apparent lack of action in stopping it’. And a motion before the next full Wrexham Council meeting states that this ‘has raised significant environmental and public health concerns among local residents and stakeholders’, and the motion ‘outlines a plan to support Natural Resources Wales to properly regulate and monitor the operations’. So, I call for a Statement from the Climate Change Secretary accordingly.”

Responding, the Trefnydd (*), Jane Hutt MS, said as it could result in a very long answer, “I'll just make the point that you're on the record raising the point, which will be recorded with the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs about the Hafod quarry, and issues that have been raised in the Johnstown area”.
