North Wales Assembly Member Mark Isherwood has hit out at the new Leader of Plaid Cymru, Adam Price AM, for seeking to undermine the 2016 EU Referendum.
Speaking in his Party’s Debate in the Assembly Chamber yesterday, Adam Price stated: “The first imperative in a democracy is to be honest with the people. We have a mandate in this Parliament, we're a people's Parliament, and we have to be honest with the people of Wales. They were lied to, and they deserve the opportunity - now that they have the truth unveiled, they deserve the opportunity to actually decide what they want to happen next”.
Intervening Mr Isherwood said: “You have been honest, very honest, in saying that you wish to campaign to reverse Brexit. Will you be also honest in admitting that, if we were to announce that there was going to be a second referendum, that would give a green light to EU negotiators to deliver a bad deal or no deal in the expectation that people would then vote to remain?”
Mr Isherwood added: “In disrespecting the outcome of the EU referendum, Mr Price knows full well that the only EU referendums to be re-run are those treaty referendums in both Denmark and Ireland which went against the EU.
“In his response to me, he dodged the self-evident fact that he is seeking to undermine the 2016 referendum result in Wales and engineer a situation in which the referendum would be reversed.”
