On Friday 2nd December, graduates of the Enabling Wales Training Course celebrated their achievements.
The course, in Active Citizenship, Equality and Democracy, is designed to empower disabled people to represent and campaign on disability issues in their communities.
Mark Isherwood AM, Acting Chair of the Cross Party Group on Disability, presented the certificates at the Conwy Business Centre in Llandudno Junction.
Mr Isherwood said:
“It was an honour to present ‘Enabling Wales’ Graduates in North Wales with their Certificates. These disability champions recognise that real change needs to be led by the community and that the people making the decisions need to walk the same path as the people on the ground. Public services must be delivered not to people, but with people, involving them in the design and delivery of services, recognising their own strengths and tailoring services accordingly.”
Enabling Wales is a Welsh Government funded project run by Disability Wales in partnership with the Wales Co-operative Centre and DEWIS CIL. This unique project has been working to strengthen and establish Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) in parts of Wales where disabled people are under-represented. Training programmes have already developed disabled young people as ambassadors and our newest graduates in North Wales now have the information and confidence to lead the fight for disability equality in their communities.
Rhiannon Hicks, Project Officer for Disability Wales’s Enabling Wales project said:
“This training project is one way we can make Wales a disability friendly country, with strong organisations that stand up for disabled people’s rights. One graduation event for young adults was held earlier this Autumn, and there will be one more graduation event in January in Newport, South Wales.”
