Social Care For Families With Disabled Children in Wales Must Be Improved

In the Senedd Chamber this afternoon, North Wales MS and Chair of the Senedd Cross-Party Group on Disability, Mark Isherwood MS, emphasised the need for improvement in the social care system for families with disabled children.

Mr Isherwood, the Shadow Counsel General, raised the matter in Spokesperson’s Questions to the Counsel General.

He said:

“The Law Commission for England and Wales is currently reviewing the law on social care for disabled children in England, seeking to make the social care system for families with disabled children fairer, simpler and up to date.

“Both Disability Charities and my own casework confirm that problems, including overlapping assessments, confusion and inefficiency, postcode lottery to access services, and blurring between child protection and need, are clearly replicated in Wales.

“What engagement are you therefore having with the Law Commission for England and Wales regarding their current review of the law on social care for disabled children in England? And what, if any, discussions are you having with Cabinet colleagues in the context of this?”

In her reply, the Counsel General said they are not currently having any discussion with the Law Commission on this point, but that they “have been discussing as a Cabinet the various issues around conflicting policy areas, and that will continue”.
