North Wales Assembly Member Mark Isherwood is looking forward to getting his energy use under control after taking part in a cookery demonstration held by Smart Energy GB to highlight the benefits of smart meters to people across Wales.
Mr Isherwood, who is Chair of the Assembly Cross Party Group on Fuel Poverty and Fuel Efficiency, joined fellow AMs in a bid to cook a plate of pancakes using the least amount of electricity.
He successfully cooked the most energy efficient plate of pancakes on the day with his culinary efforts costing 1.74p in energy, compared to the average plate of pancakes cooking cost of 2.19p. A smart meter was used to measure the AM’s energy usage, displaying the results in pounds and pence on a digital display.
With more than 8.6 million smart meters already installed across Great Britain, Mr Isherwood AM is looking forward to seeing smart meters help people to monitor their energy usage across North Wales.
Those who have upgraded to a smart meter are already feeling the benefits. Three quarters of people who have a smart meter say they would recommend one to family and friends, with a similar proportion (80 per cent) taking steps to cut down on their energy usage. (August 2017 Smart Energy Outlook.)
After hearing more about the technology from Smart Energy GB, the voice of the smart meter rollout, Mr Isherwood said:
“When I’m cooking at home, I don’t know how much energy I’m using. Through taking part in this cookery demonstration, not only was I able to get in a bit of flipping practice before Shrove Tuesday, but I was able to see first-hand how smart meters will give us all much more control of what we spend on gas and electricity, and finally put an end to estimated bills.
“I would encourage all my constituents to call their energy supplier today and ask for an appointment to get their own smart meter fitted.”
Smart meters bring everyone in North Wales and across the rest of Wales and Great Britain accurate bills. They also mean that you can see exactly how much energy you are using in pounds and pence, and in near real time.
