It was a privilege to attend the North Wales Young Enterprise Company and Team of the year 2017 Area Finals. Congratulations to all the Finalists, including St Christopher’s School Wrexham, and best of luck to the winning teams and companies from Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, Ysgol Dinas Bran, Pengwern College and Ysgol Bryn Elian, who will represent North Wales at the all Wales Final on 15th June.
I was a guest of the National Federation of Women's Institutes Wales Committee at the 91st WI Federations of Wales Conference, with the theme “Back to our Roots”. Speakers addressed issues including domestic violence and abuse, maternity services, dementia, disability, farming and S4C Welsh language broadcasting.
During another visit to St Joseph’s Catholic and Anglican High School, Wrexham, I enjoyed speaking to pupils about the work of the Assembly and what an Assembly Member does.
I attended Wrexham’s Nightingale House Hospice AGM, with the theme “Together we are Hospice Care”, recognizing their reliance upon the community and fantastic teamwork to provide end of life care. We heard of their plans to meet growing demand for their services. Although our community hospices can help our health service deliver more for its money, they only receive 20% of their funding from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board, with 80% raised from the local community.
As Species Champion for the Curlew in Wales , I supported 'Curlew in Crisis’ week from 24th-29th April. Although the North Wales moors support the largest population of breeding curlew in Wales, numbers in Wales declined by 81% between 1993 and 2006, when it was estimated that just over 1,000 pairs of breeding curlew remain in Wales. These special birds are threatened by loss of suitable habitat and predation. The Welsh Government must give them a voice.
I had a meeting with BT’s Group Director Wales and Regional Manager to discuss their roll-out of the ‘Superfast Cymru’ Broadband programme in North Wales, local connection issues raised by constituents and the importance of Superfast Broadband to the rural and tourism economy of our region.
A useful meeting in Wrexham focused on a project to help Polish families understand the education system here, help pupils/students integrate, and provide support on issues including English classes for adults and Further Education.
